Poplar Street, Petersburg Following is a review of Pike Central High School sports highlights during the first six months of the 2017- 18 school year. Sports highlights during the second six months of the school year – from Jan. 1, 2018, through June 30, 2018 – will appear in next week's edition of the Press-Dispatch. JULY • The Pike Central High School cheerleaders' travel and home teams had a very successful week while at- tending a National Cheerlead- ers Association camp at Vin- cennes University July 10 -13. The cheerleaders competed in NCA Game Day on July 13, and won the Top Team 2017 trophy. They also received a spirit stick each day, five Su- perior blue ribbons, one Ex- cellent red ribbon on evalua- tions, and the Stunt S.A.F.E. Award, along with their NF- HS squad credentials and a bid to Nationals. Kayla Sand- ers won the Individual Lead- ership Award and a total of seven Pike Central cheer- leaders – Emily Brasher, Mi- ki Feldpausch, Alexis Huff, Jenna Meyer, Kayla Sanders, Hallee Stephens and Abigail Sutt – were nominated for All-American honors. • Pike Central High School rising senior Bryant Nalley was among 200 boys' and girls' basketball players to participate in the 15th Annu- al IBCA/IHSA A Underclass Showcase on July 11-12 at Ben Davis High School in In- dianapolis. A 6 -foot-5 forward, Nalley averaged 13.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals as the Chargers went 15 -12 while repeating as sectional champions. • The Pike Central High School volleyball team placed third in Summer Spike, which was hosted by Washington on July 22. The Lady Char- gers opened the four-team round-robin tournament with hard-fought straight-set loss- es to sectional foes Vincennes Lincoln (25 -21, 25 -22) and Washington (25 -24, 25 -23) before finishing the day with a 25 -15, 16 -25, 15 -6 victory over North Daviess. AUGUST • Senior Natalie Burkhart fired a 4-over-par 40 to lead the Pike Central High School girls' golf team to a sea- son-opening 184-210 wn over Washington on Aug. 2 at the Prides Creek Golf Course. • Jason Roach, who served as head coach for the Pike Central High School varsi- ty boys' basketball team for three seasons, was named the new varsity boys' bas- ketball coach at Evansville North High School. Accord- ing to a press release issued Aug. 7 by the Evansville-Van- derburgh School Corporation, Roach replaced Andre Thom- as – who was recently named as the new athletic director at Evansville Harrison – as the next head coach of the Hus- kies. Roach, 33, led the Char- gers to a 12-11 record during the 2014-15 campaign – end- ing a stretch of 15 consecutive losing seasons – and followed that up with back-to-back Class 3A sectional champion- ships in 2015 -16 and 2016 -17, compiling won-loss records of 20 -6 and 15 -12, respectively. • The Pike Central High School football team tuned up for the start of the 2017 season with a scrimmage at Wood Memorial on Aug. 11. The Chargers dominated the Trojans both offensively and defensively, scoring a total of nine touchdowns – includ- ing two each by junior Randy Powell and sophomore Ma- rio Fields – while allowing just one. • Senior Taylor Deffen- doll scored seven goals and junior Kelsey Barrett added three more as the Pike Cen- tral High School girls' soccer team opened its season with a 15 -6 victory at North Knox on Aug. 16. • The Pike Central High School volleyball team over- came a 2-0 deficit in a best- of-five match against visiting Washington to defeat the La- dy Hatchets 16 -25, 18 -25, 25 - 18, 26 -24, 15 -11 on Aug. 16. • Junior Natalie Bohnert shot a school-record tying three-over-par 39 as the Pike Central High School girls' golf team placed first in a three- PIKE CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS YEAR IN REVIEW - PART ONE Above: From left to right, Pike Central High School senior Caden Arm- strong, junior Draven Huff and freshman Ijaa Chambers placed among the top 20 runners during the sectional meet at South Knox on Saturday, Oct. 7.
